Our Roots

Neighborhood self-reliance and mutual aid

Started in 2021 by four Elmwood neighbors who turned a vacant municipal depot into a shared community hearth, prioritizing direct cooperation over top-down philanthropy.

How We Built It

Reclaiming the municipal depot

Neighbors gathered with donated lumber, hand tools, and backyard scrap to clear the floors and raise the first communal work tables. Every nail hammered in those early Saturdays belonged to someone living within walking distance.

Our Approach

Direct cooperation versus bureaucracy

We reject institutional charity models that treat locals as passive recipients. Instead, we cultivate practical skills, shared tools, and open pantry circles where every neighbor contributes what they can and takes what they need.

Every dollar raised stays within a tight three-block radius, funding shared infrastructure, garden beds, and weekend workshops without administrative overhead or outside grants.

The Hearth

Pull up an extra chair; nobody stays a stranger here past the first cup of tea.
